The Purple-backed Sunbeam is a species of hummingbird found only in north-central Peru, specifically within an area of less than 200 square kilometers in the upper Marañón River watershed, centered on the community of El Molino. The species is classified as Vulnerable to extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The El Molino community expressed interest in growing alder trees to reforest degraded areas and has begun collaborating with the American Bird Conservancy and our Peruvian conservation partner, Asociación de Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN), on a multi-year active restoration effort. Summerfield Tea Bar is now participating as a brand in this restoration initiative.

The project we’re supporting also includes annual biological monitoring of local areas and restored sites, maintenance of the tree nursery, workshops with local communities and schools on tree planting and conservation topics, and the creation and distribution of outreach materials.
